The Hero Book Workshop

An art and narrative therapy course

”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
Marianne Williamson, quoted by Nelson Mandela at his inauguration.

Description

The Hero Book is an art and narrative group workshop, in which participants rewrite the story of their own lives with themselves as a hero.

It is profound in its simplicity and uses a combination of methods. e.g. drawing and colour, talking and writing, movement and reflection.

The course is 18 hours (6 sessions of 3 hours each) with group facilitator and complementary therapist Suzanne Leighton (BSc (UCT), MSc (WITS)).

Outcomes:

You will create a well-illustrated autobiography – a graphic personal document of lasting significance.

Your self-esteem should be renewed, and you should have a clearer sense of inner strength, direction and purpose.

You would be able to use the techniques to supplement your work.

You will join a larger support circle of past heroes called “The Hero Circle”.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to facilitated the process, if you so wish. The individual process is part of the training and you will receive a facilitator’s manual. This rollout provides a powerful multiplying factor, appropriate in the South African context.

Who will benefit?

Those who are interested in identifying the hero in themselves.

Those who would like to create a record of their lives.

Those feeling stuck or at a crossroads.

Those in the caring role will be supported and enriched.

Practitioners, therapists and also their patients or clients.

Those eager to shift a relationship with a partner, parent, child or sibling.

Note the change in style of the same person’s drawings over the 6 week course.

You do not have to be an artist – the activities are guided.
